Who gets to decide what news is and what it should look like? And how do you best measure the success of journalistic work? There may be no universal answers to those questions, but it makes for an interesting journey trying to come up with some.
This website features student work from Reimagining News, a course developed by associate professor Nicole Blanchett for the Journalism program in the Creative School at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU), taught in 2022 with Cheryl Vallender. In this course, students are challenged to explore the boundaries of what news might be, with an aim to diversify journalistic formats and reach underserved demographics and communities. The goal is to promote engagement by targeting a specific audience and connecting with that audience, developing content that is well-sourced and evidence-based.
